Advancements in EMATs
for In-line and In-service Applications


Twenty-six members, guests and MVCC students attended the February 8 meeting at the Golden Pheasant in Elmhurst. Jeff Monks of Innerspec Technologies from Lynchburg, VA. Gave the presentation. Jeff discussed the principles of EMATs, then highlighted various applications.

Many of the inspections involved high production steel processing plants for sheet and tube. Others included applications for the beverage industry and power boilers. Monks described the major improvements in EMAT power sources. Advances in User Interface, microprocessor and other automation rounded out the discussion of innovation.

Eddywayne Messmer and William Klene were both received the Mentoring Award from ASNT.

Advancements in EMATs
for In-line and In-service Applications

Jeff will review the general principles behind EMATs.

He will next discuss the use of non-contact EMATs for industrial use.

Monks will end the evening by highlighting various applications that have taken advantage of the non-contact feature and speed of EMA technology.


Speaker Biography

Jeff Monks is the Director of Sales, North America for Innerspec Technologies in Lynchburg, VA. He is an ASNT NDT Level II in ET, MT, PT & UT. Innerspec Technologies is a manufacturer of EMAT-based UT systems.

Jeff worked for DeW Systems in England where he was the marketing director for several years. Monks previously owned and managed his own NDT-equipment and service companies—PLM and Equipment Consulting. He worked as a Level II inspector in the petrochemical industry during outages.

Monks has been an active member of ASNT since 1988. He served as the founding chair of the Northern Indiana Section from 1988 until 1990, and was a member of its Board until 1994. In 1992, he became a regional director and has continued in that role through the present. His national ASNT experience began on the Section Operations Council, where he has been a member of the Section Management, Membership, Regional Directors and Awards Divisions. He was the chair of the Awards Division for two years until he became a national director at large in 1999. Monks also served as the chair of the Exhibitor's Committee during the redefining years of the Committee, 1998-2002.

Monks received his Bachelors degree at the U of I in Chicago. He patented the DecaCoil, a high-production, multi-directional induced MT system.

Jeff—married with four children—calls Noblesville, IN, home.
