NDE of Windshield Glass
Adhesive Bonds

by Henrique Reis

of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign
217-333-1228

Windshield glass is a sandwich of laminations. This layered construction combines the best of both worlds of compressive- and tensile strengths of glass and adhesive.

Samples of windshield-glass with different adhesive-bond strengths are made and tested using mechanical guided waves. Adhesive-bond strength are then evaluated using the well-known pummel-test method.

Imperfect interfaces between the plastic interface and the two adjacent glass plates were modeled using a bed of longitudinal and shear springs. Spring constants are estimated using fracture mechanics in conjunction with surface analysis of the plastic interlayer and of the two adjacent glass plates.

In addition to mode-shape analysis, the phase and energy velocities will be discussed. Guided-wave theoretical predictions of adhesion levels (obtained using this multilayered model) are validated using the pummel test results.

Results show that this approach is useful in the NDE of adhesive-bond strengths in laminated safety glass.

Speaker Biography

Henrique Reis' main research areas are in the development of on-line process control and materials characterization, and artificial intelligence towards application in imaging processing. He places special emphasis on the optimization of NDE techniques lending themselves to intelligent manufacturing. Reis has also research interests in the areas of QC-inspection methods, design of composite structures, and design for inspection.

A native Angolan with a sojourn in Brazil, Dr. Reis is currently full professor at UI Urbana-Champaign in the Department of Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. from MIT in 1975 and 1978. At UI, Dr. Reis is the Director of the Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation Research Laboratory—which he founded in 1987.

Reis has served as Chairs of the ASNT Research Council and the ASNT University Programs Committee, and has served on the ASNT Board of Directors and Executive Committee. He is also a member of the Acoustic Emission Working Group (AEWG), and a fellow of the British Institute of Nondestructive Testing (BINDT).

Henrique has published over 150 technical articles and reports on NDT and evaluation. He has organized several conferences and symposia, and co-founded and -edited of the series, “Topics on Non-destructive Evaluation Series” for ASNT.

Dr. Reis has consulted for the likes of Eaton, Chicago Extruded Metals, Kraft, R.R. Donnelley & Sons, and Sundstrand Aviation.
