Speaker Biography
Henrique Reis' main research areas are in the development of on-line process control and materials
characterization, and artificial intelligence towards application in imaging processing.
He places special emphasis on the optimization of NDE techniques lending themselves to intelligent manufacturing.
Reis has also research interests in the areas of QC-inspection methods, design of composite structures, and design for inspection.
A native Angolan with a sojourn in Brazil, Dr. Reis is currently full professor at UI Urbana-Champaign
in the Department of Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering.
He received his M.S. and Ph.D. from MIT in 1975 and 1978.
At UI, Dr. Reis is the Director of the
Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation Research Laboratory—which he founded in 1987.
Reis has served as Chairs of the ASNT Research Council and the ASNT University Programs Committee, and has served
on the ASNT Board of Directors and Executive Committee. He is also a member of the Acoustic Emission Working Group (AEWG),
and a fellow of the British Institute of Nondestructive Testing (BINDT).
Henrique has published over 150 technical articles and reports on NDT and evaluation. He has
organized several conferences and symposia, and co-founded and -edited of the series,
“Topics on Non-destructive Evaluation Series” for ASNT.
Dr. Reis has consulted for the likes of Eaton, Chicago Extruded Metals, Kraft, R.R. Donnelley & Sons, and Sundstrand Aviation.
