NDT of Friction Stir Welds in Aluminum

by Stu Kleven

of
Alloyweld Inspection

The introduction of new manufacturing processes can provide NDT technicians with unique challenges. Friction stir welding (FSW), which came about in 1991, is making inroads into Manufacturing.

FSW, a solid-state process, can produce weldments of outstanding mechanical properties. Inspection of FSW joints can cause difficulties due to a unique combination of discontinuities. Lack of fusion and kissing bonds are very difficult to detect and characterize. In addition, standard NDT methods like angle-beam UT can miss certain types of voids.

This presentation will reveal lessons learned on a series of plates for qualification of aluminum weldments. These plates are for for ships under the Navy Specifications T9074-AS-GIB-010/271 and Navsea 0900-003-8000, Class 1 for PT, and Navsea 0900-006-3010, Class 1 for UT. In addition, digital computed RT corroborated these UT results. Results of this testing will be used for development of standard defect plates.
