RT of Steel Castings

by
Malcolm Blair

of
Steel Founders Society of Association

Radiography of steel castings is frequently used by purchasers to ensure that a certain quality level has been achieved by the foundry. The radiographic standards that are used to determine these quality levels are compared to the images taken from the casting to determine whether they comply with the requirements. Work has shown that it is extremely difficult to differentiate between the most commonly referenced quality levels this leads to disagreements between the supplier and the purchaser.

Current radiographic standards do not give an indication as to the anticipated performance of the part – the standards are commonly termed to be workmanship standards. Designers of components wish to know the effect of the indication on the performance of their parts.

Two approaches are being considered for an improvement in the quality and performance of steel castings through the use of RT and solidification simulation. The approach to RT quality relies on the measurement of the size of the indication at some orientation to the stress caused by loading of the part in service. Solidification simulation addresses indications that would not normally be seen on a film.

Both of these approaches will be discussed.
