On Saturday, October 17, 2009, ASNT Chicago Section presented the NDT field at the Des Plaines Library Science Fair.
Parents were invited to visit the school and see the NDT laboratory facilities.
Several table-top displays of equipment allowed for inspection of parts for discontinuities.
Stu Kleven, ASNT Level III from Alloyweld Inspection, and Nancy Glickman from the Moraine Valley Community College
Work Force Development, ran the booth.
Nancy, Stu and other volunteers demonstrated the use and importance of NDT and its possibilities as a career.
A steady stream of families attended. Many of the other engineering disciplines were present.
The use of MT, PT, RT, UT & VT were highlighted.
A variety of samples with discontinuities was displayed. A demonstration using each test method ensued.
Samples included castings, extrusions, weldments and wrought materials—and even a honeycomb structure from a 747 engine cowl.
Glickman distributed brochures on the NDT curriculum at MVCC as well as ASNT brochures and articles.
